19k-Mile “The Observer Coupe” 1982 BMW 635CSi 5-Speed

This 1982 BMW 635CSi is a right-hand-drive model that was modified when new with a retractable panoramic glass roof and served as a cross-promotional vehicle for the British newspaper The Observer , BMW UK, and custom builder MGA (Mike Gibbs Associates) Developments. Dubbed “The Observer Coupé”, the car was revealed at the 1982 Birmingham International Motor Show and featured an altered profile, bespoke lower bodywork, two-tone paint, and Centra 16” wheels. The roof retraction system was removed in the late 1980s, and a refurbishment was carried out in 2020. The car retains European-market equipment, headlight wipers, black leather upholstery, a Blaupunkt cassette head unit, power windows, and a 3.4-liter inline-six linked to a five-speed manual transmission. Acquired by the selling dealer in 2025 and subsequently imported to the US, this custom 635CSi indicates 19k miles and is now offered with historical documents, service records, literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Texas title. This 635CSi was envisioned as a coupe that could convert into an open-air convertible at speed. Over a period of less than four weeks and internally dubbed “ Project M3 ”, MGA Developments modified the car with two glass panels that retracted individually on tracks added to the roof and C-pillars. The panels stowed in a compartment built into a raised trunk lid. The leading edge of the trunk lid was raised, and a rear spoiler was added. The C-pillars were reshaped, and custom trim surrounds the side windows. The retraction mechanism was removed in 1988, and the glass panels were sealed in place. Conceptual drawings and handwritten notes trace the project’s development. A graphic treatment was added to the forward roof panel, which is now fixed in place. MGA Developments also fabricated custom fiberglass lower body work. The car was then finished in two-tone gray, and it retains “The Observer Coupé” custom lettering.
